REGNO STUDIOS: KOZAN BRUSH

HOW TWISTED CAN WE TURN A HAPPY TRACK?

HOW TWISTED CAN WE TURN A HAPPY TRACK?

There are just a handful of things more fun than tastefully destroying audio… at least for me.

FOR this COMIC DUB project, we had the pleasure of transforming what's originally a cheerful and

fun theme soundtrack into a horror concept.

NOT STEERING AWAY TOO MUCH FROM THE MAIN SOUND OF THE PROJECT

the comic is generally on the more absurd and comedy side, but this episode takes quite a break from the standard funnier tone and goes a lot more into the horror, with just a bit of fun mixed in but a lot less than the comics' usual.

PROCESS

as the saying goes…

don't reinvent the wheel.

…just resample it.

(or something like that)

So that's exactly what i did.

With the right context, something with a 'happy' musical tone can also be creepy.

The process of transforming the orginal track

The intention was to evoke a feeling of brokenness and unease, taking recognizable elements from the original theme and weaving them into a haunting and ominous soundscape.

This reflects the twisted and unfamiliar world the characters enter, as well as the presence of a lurking stalker creature connected to the comic's main character.

RESULT

The team was on board with the idea and felt it perfectly matched the tone they were aiming for.

Personally, I thought the concept worked well, but the overall arrangement felt a bit too minimalistic. which isn't necessarily bad for the early stages of the project, as it left room to explore and adjust during the final audio-post stages.

nonetheless, the texture that the track brought was the right one to illustrate the setting of the episode, and that's a win in my book.

FEEDBACK

Luis Fuentevilla – @regnostudios

everyone loves the theme! :P and it brought up the old theme you made, to which everyone also loved that one!

One thing I always loved about these tracks was the very empty large space, almost liminal feeling from some parts
